Reflexology is a natural therapy that has been practiced in various forms all over the world and throughout history. It has strong links to Traditional Chinese Medicine as 6 pairs of the meridians (energy channels) end or begin in the feet and hands.
Modern day reflexology is attributed to the work of Dr William Fitzgerald (1872). He discovered that by applying pressure to specific areas of the hands feet and face he could perform minor surgery without the need for anesthesia. He developed what he called reflex zone therapy which divided the body into 10 longitudinal zones running from head to toe.
A student of his Eunice Ingham (1930) further refined his work and developed the first maps of the feet and hands. The overriding principle is that the ears, hands and feet are Microsystems (maps) for the entire body.
Reflexology is defined as an application of a stimulus or stimuli to a reflex point. This stimulation thorough the use of specific techniques and the application of pressure has a positive (balancing) effect on related organs and systems throughout the body.
It is an ideal modality for health maintenance and illness prevention as it is a wholitsic practice. This means that at every session the whole foot is mobilized and therefore the whole body is in effect harmonized with focus being placed on any specific areas that require additional attention.
There is evidence within research that is demonstrating the positive impact reflexology is having on specific health issues such as cancer, gyneacological issues, anxiety/depression, gastrointestinal complaints, pregnancy, labour and lactation.
